The earliest master known is Shebek Mehmed Efendi who was the first to document the art of marbling with his book "Tertibi Risale-i Ebri". The star-like form or large dots intermingling colors of Mehmed Efendi, nicknamed "Hatip" or "Preacher" because of his position at Ayasofia Mosque, are still called "Preacher's Marbling". Later the dervish association known as the Lodge of the Ozbek's at Uskudar took its place as an important source for the art of marbling. From Sheikh Sadik Efendi to Necmeddin Okyay's nephew Mustafa Duzgunman the art flourished under the auspices of this lodge.

The sheikh of the Lodge of

the Ozbek's, Sadik Efendi taught the art to both of his sons (Nazif and Ibrahim Edhem Efendi, who became sheikh after his father, was famous for his success in the fine arts, earning the honorable title of "Hezarfen" and becoming one of the great masters of the art of marbling. After Edhem Efendi's friend Sami Efendi and his student Aziz Efendi (who was Sheikh as well), the next well-known name in the art is Necmeddin Okyay. He is the father and master of floral marbling.

The most outstanding names among contemporary marbling artists are first Mustafa Duzgunman, Who died on September 12, 1990, and then Alparslan Babaoglu, Fuat Basar, Sabri Mandiraci, and Timucin Tanarslan.
